Chapter 5
Sadek looked up from his manuals and saw Azah was asleep on the pads, the coding box sitting on the floor with a glowing green light. He was curious, so he picked up a heavy rifle and gave the box a solid whack. Azah didnât stir, and the green light stayed on. âHuh,â he said and looked closer. It appeared unchanged. Still, some little voice in his mind said it was changed. Azah had been so intent for so long. What had she done?
After that nasty shock, he was reluctant to mess with the thing. He hadnât told her how intense the jolt had been. Heâd tingled from head to toe and was worried it had come close to stopping his heart. Their instructors never joked around with rules. That was a booby trap meant for a Flatar, pure and simple. Nasty.
Finally, curiosity got the better of him, and Sadek picked up an insulated driver and pried at one of the wire bunches. It popped loose, and the green light stayed on. His jaw hung open in surprise. What had she done? At least it didnât shock him, and the driverâs built in current sensor didnât flash. Sheâd disabled the security system. He got the rest of his tools and sat down next to the box to open it up.
Theyâd been taught a fair amount about how technology worked, mostly centered on weapon systems. Still, Union tech was all related in one way or another. A high-voltage power feed or a data-controlling box was the same whether it went into a laser or a medical scanner. He got the main box lid off and looked inside. There were high voltage discharge connections on all the connectors. How in entropy did she get around those? he wondered. Then he looked into the machineâs guts and gasped.
It was a relatively simple apparatus. A computer was mounted on one of the five remaining interior surfaces, the electrical wire junction connectors on another, power on another, the switches on still another, and the lights on the final. The arrangement left the center open, only now it wasnât open. Now it was filled with what must be Azahâs silk. âWhat has she done?â he said again, this time aloud.
The silk was extremely useful and tough as steel. It was also something they knew should be kept hidden. None of the other Tortantula had the stuff, and nothing in their training had discussed it. If they could all do it, and it was as useful as it seemed, they would have gotten instructions on how best to take advantage of it.
The stuff in the box looked the same, though it was used in a way heâd never seen. It was woven together in patterns, interconnected between the lights, switches, power, and computer. The final remaining side was used to connect the largest mass of silk. As he looked, cocking his head from side to side, he could see the silk was shimmering. No, it was scintillating with its own light.
